Chickpeas: crop losses support prices

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. The chickpea market is developing differently: in India, crop losses and lower production are supporting prices, whilst in Canada, good crop prospects and high stock levels are holding the market back.

Significant crop losses

Despite good stocks of new and old-crop goods, exporters in the Indore-Bhopal region of India are sticking to their prices in the face of relatively weak domestic demand. As a result, fewer goods are being released onto the market, whilst business in the growing regions continues to be buoyant. Following a slight softening in recent days, a renewed upward trend is emerging.
