NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Sowing is progressing much slower than last year for chickpeas in India. Canada is closely monitoring the situation in Asia and Australia.

Dry conditions prevail

Chickpea sowing has started in India. Sufficient soil moisture is crucial for the plants. Yet, conditions were still comparatively dry at the start of the season in west and central India, where most of the main growing regions, namely Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as well as Gujarat, are located as the Unified Portal of Agricultural Statistics shows. Expectation is that the weather will continue to be rather dry and warm in November. This may have an adverse impact on the crop. Prices are on the rise.
