Chickpeas: quality concerns in Canada

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. In India, market players are anticipating further price rises, while in Canada the focus is on the quality of this year’s crop. Production here is lower than last year.

Tight supply meets strong export demand

Prices for Indian chickpeas are likely to rise further in the coming days. This season’s crop of the Kabuli variety, at 2.2-2.3 million mt, is significantly smaller than usual. The average crop is around 3.0-3.1 million mt. High export volumes from Madhya Pradesh last month have further reduced stocks at most trading centres. There are still around five months to go until the new crop will be available, with sowing only due to begin next month.

Import options from Canada are now also limited, as increased landed
