Chickpeas: strong export demand keeps prices high

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. India’s chickpea market is characterised by strong exports and tighter stocks. The smaller crop is also putting upward pressure on prices. In Canada, harvest delays are currently supporting the market.

Export demand reduces stocks

Although large quantities of Kabuli chickpeas remain available in India, the cost of shipments to export markets has risen significantly. This is primarily due to strong export demand along the Indore-Bhopal corridor, which is outstripping supply for the domestic market. A substantial proportion of stocks has already been exported, keeping prices in the growing regions at elevated levels. Although prices have eased slightly in recent days, they are now expected to rise again.
