NEW DELHI. While traders got the crop estimates for chickpeas wrong In India last year, the new season comes with a whole set of new challenges.

Encouraging crop conditions

Sporadic arrivals of the new crop have already begun in in the state of Karnataka, and a substantial influx is expected within a month. Major producing states such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh witnessed excellent sowing conditions after a late winter caused delays. In addition, subsequent favourable weather has supported robust crop development, signalling a promising crop. Prices are under pressure.
