WASHINGTON DC/ SINGAPORE. North American Cocoa grindings dropped significantly in the second quarter. Judging by the recently announced cocoa grindings for the third quarter it, however, seems that demand has recovered.

Grindings in North America are on the rise

Q3 grindings in North America have risen by as much as 3.5% to 128,494 mt over last year. This rise is much higher than in Europe. It should, however, be noted that with 363,122 mt nearly three times as many beans were ground in Europe. In Germany as much as 106,147 mt were ground causing the German Confectioners’ Association to speak of a nominal rise in demand.

Asian grindings are still in for a record year

With grindings rising by 3.7% to 196,418 mt the Cocoa Association of Asia has recorded a new record for Q3. Grindings have even risen by as much as 5.95% over Q2 and are reckoned to reflect the hike in demand for cocoa products in Asia. Should this trend continue in Q4 Asia is in for another record year.

AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT. The grinding statistics from Europe and North America fall short of expectations. Last year’s prolonged summer weather has put off consumers from eating chocolate in Germany and concerns have been voiced over the mid-crop in the Côte d’Ivoire. Traders are, however, skeptical towards these and similar statements.
