TEHRAN. Low prices and high costs have put farmers off from cultivating cumin only a few years back. The lack of a clear export market is an additional problem. With the spread of the coronavirus export demand is largely subdued.

Prices decline further

Since cumin requires little water and is highly valued in the medical and food industry, production has increased in some regions. In Taybad acreage will, for instance, rise to 3,000 hectares. Production may rise by as much as 50% to 1,500 metric tonnes this year.

Prices have, however, continued to decline by as much as EUR 1.30-1.32 per kg, depending on variety since March. The spread of the coronavirus has largely subdued export demand. More than 60,000 infections and more than 3,800 deaths have been registered in Iran so far. Market players reckon that the healthcare system is in good condition to deal with the virus.
