BRUSSELS/REUS. EU imports have maintained record-high levels for dates in the first three quarters of the year as official statistics show. As the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council reports demand is very strong for Deglet Noor and Medjool dates.

EU maintains record-high demand

Total EU imports may have only inched upwards by 3% to 107,003 mt in the first three quarters of 2025 as compared with the same period in 2024, yet this figure has set another record after last year's imports also exceeded 100,000 mt. In terms of value, imports have taken a similar turn by climbing by 4% to a record EUR 241.821 million (USD 282.98 million).

Shipments from Tunisia as the main trading partner have dipped by 9%, whereas imports from Algeria are flat. Iran’s shipments to the EU have also witnessed a 5% downturn. Within the EU France accounts for 25% of total imports, followed by Germany with 17% and the Netherlands wit 12%.

Unchanged INC estimates

In November, the INC left the production estimates for table dates unchanged. Global production stands 7% higher than last year at 1.29 million mt and total supply 5% higher at 1.537 million mt. Good climatic conditions have benefited output and helped to improve fruit quality over last year.

Demand is particularly strong for Deglet Noor and Medjool dates. While the former variety is mainly  grown in Algeria, Tunisia, Israel and California, the main producing countries for the latter are Saudi Arabia, Egypt Morocco and Jordan and Israel. New plantations have boosted Medjool production.

Five factors — unilateral price setting for dates, the sudden halt of international trade due to war, a sharp decline in domestic market demand, the imposition of an export ban, and a severe shortage of packaging materials on the eve of the harvest season — have placed Iran’s date industry in a worrying situation as local exporters report.
