MANILA. Prices for raw coconuts are currently rising in all countries of origin, which is also affecting desiccated coconut prices. The coconut oil market is less volatile. China is buying diligently, while demand from the EU has yet to pick up.

Tension on the commodity market

Prices for raw coconuts are rising in all major countries of origin, putting upward pressure on costs along the entire value chain, according to the latest report by the experts at JCP International. In the Philippines, the market for desiccated coconuts is largely sold out for February and March, with suppliers already focusing on shipments from April onwards. In Indonesia, processors have raised their prices as raw material costs rise, mainly due to strong demand for coconut oil. In addition, the upcoming Ramadan is having a dampening effect on productivity, as workers and farmers traditionally reduce their activity. This is exacerbated by the Eid holidays in the third week of March, during which factories are expected to remain closed for around ten days. In Vietnam, too, the Tet holidays will result in a production stoppage of around ten days. Prices are also firmer in Sri Lanka, indicating tighter regional supply and improved demand sentiment, according to JCP.

Coconut oil drives up prices

The coconut oil market has picked up significantly in the past two weeks, buoyed by a strong upturn in global demand. After falling sharply, prices appeared to have bottomed out in January – an assessment that has since been confirmed, as reported by JCP International. China in particular was an active buyer, as importers secured their supplies ahead of the Chinese New Year. This high demand has reduced availability and driven prices up rapidly. Market players from all major countries of origin expect buying interest to remain robust even after the Chinese New Year.

However, experts at T. M. Duché emphasise that the market for desiccated coconuts currently differs significantly from the oil segment. The coconut oil market is less volatile, but this calm could quickly end if demand from the EU returns and the supply of coconut oil continues to tighten. In Europe, trade in coconut oil had been at a standstill for months before activity picked up again recently. Currently, the focus is primarily on the smaller price difference between coconut oil and palm kernel oil. As a result, so-called switch-buyers are increasingly considering the use of coconut oil again. At the same time, market estimates are circulating about extensive stocks in parts of Asia, which are kept close to the end consumer and have so far slowed down short-term demand in Europe. Globally, declining palm oil stocks in Malaysia and an uncertain outlook in the soy sector are also affecting sentiment on the oil markets.
