MANILA. International prices for desiccated coconuts remain stable, whilst domestic prices in the Philippines continue to rise. Meanwhile, the EU and the Philippines have reached a broad understanding regarding a free trade agreement.

Desiccated coconuts stable, domestic prices rising

The international market for desiccated coconuts remained stable last week, with export quotations unchanged for the 32nd consecutive week, according to the experts at T.M. Duché in their latest update. At the same time, prices on the Philippine domestic market continued to rise. Exporters have not yet adjusted the international price range, but may have less scope for price reductions due to higher raw material and domestic prices.

Coconut oil declines slightly

Coconut oil fell slightly in Europe following last week’s recovery, but remained above the USD 2,000/mt mark. Trading interest continued to focus primarily on later delivery dates in 2027, whilst buyers were largely absent for the remaining 2026 contracts, according to T.M. Duché. In the Philippines, by contrast, prices for crude and refined coconut oil continued to rise.

Coconut prices showed a slight decline again in some regions monitored by the United Coconut Association of the Philippines (UCAP), following the recovery of the past two weeks. According to the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), national average prices at the mill and farmgate levels remained above their August averages but were significantly below last year’s levels.

Focus on trade agreement

Drewry’s World Container Index has recently fallen slightly, mainly due to a continued decline in rates on Asia–Europe routes. Further declines are expected in the coming weeks. At the same time, freight rates within Asia have risen for the fifth week running to a record high. According to T.M. Duché, typhoon-related disruptions, congestion and higher demand ahead of the Golden Week are limiting available capacity there.

Furthermore, the European Union and the Philippines have reached a broad understanding on a free trade agreement. The formal implementation of the agreement is set to be taken forward in the coming months. The agreement is intended to improve market access, strengthen supply chains and ensure more reliable trading conditions. The EU market is of particular importance to the Philippine coconut industry.
