MALATYA. Buyers are totally confused by the wide price gaps persisting for dried apricots in Turkey. Domestic demand is driving the market for big-sized fruits. Rebuilding is still underway in Malatya, which greatly suffered from last year’s devastating earthquakes.

Bad export performance

Exports may be up on last year, but suppliers are far from satisfied with this. Turkey has in fact shipped 15,893 mt of dried apricots this season so far, which is 36% up on last year’s 11,639 mt. At 2,388 mt weekly exports are also clearly up on the 1,693 mt shipped in the same week last year. Yet, suppliers are disappointed with the current export rate of 7,000-8,000 mt per month. They state that exports should at least be around 10,000 mt per month at the start of the new season.
