Dried figs: turbulent price development in Iran

TEHRAN. The market has witnessed a drastic slump in prices over the last three months. This decline is mainly driven by exchange rate fluctuations, the impact of the sanctions and the harvest season. Now, the harvest is, however, nearly complete and market players are confident that reliable predictions are possible.

Drastic decline in prices

Harvesting will continue until mid-October. Processing and drying will then take 15-20 days, meaning that dried fig arrivals will continue through to the beginning of November. Although concerns over weather-related crop damages due to floods, coupled with tight supplies and exchange rate fluctuations drove up prices to exceptionally high levels in July with prices ranging at EUR 5.75-8.11 per kg. With the start of the harvest season on August, however, the concerns of crop damages proved unfounded and prices started to decline.
