MOSCOW/OTTAWA. Russian flaxseed traders are pleased with the continuously growing export figures this season; about half of the deliveries went to the EU.

In March, Russian suppliers exported more than 36,000 mt of flaxseed, this corresponds to an increase of 47.8% compared to last month (24,500 mt) and a rise of 3.1% compared to March 2016 (35,100 mt). In the first seven months of the 2016/17 season, a total of 453,700 mt were exported. In the next few months, however, exports should slow down a bit. UkrAgroConsult estimates the export potential at about 560,000-570,000 mt. In addition to the EU, Turkey has developed into one of the most important buyers this year. The country has presently imported 181,300 mt from Russia, compared to only 48,600 mt at this time last year. It is followed by Vietnam (15,400 mt) and China (14,600 mt).

Possible price rises

The prices for Eastern European flaxseed are currently at the same level as last year. However, there could be a slight rise in prices over the summer months when supplies start running low.

Increase in acreage

Meanwhile, the May report has become available for Canada. Domestic consumption in the 2017/18 season is currently being estimated at 40,000 mt, although it has already been observed over the last few years that initially low consumption estimates had to be corrected upwards by a significant amount later in the season. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are currently expecting acreage to increase by more than 30%. Disregarding the lower yields, this would result in a 17.4% increase in production.
