LODZ. Two holidays this week largely paralysed the Polish market, and at the same time, the supply on the market increased.

The sowing of the fields in the producing countries is in progress. In Canada, Russia and Kazakhstan, the flaxseed acreage is supposed to be bigger than last year. Under normal circumstances, an accordingly high production can be expected. But already in this season, the market could not complain of lacking availability.

Polish processors want to reduce their stocks and have currently stepped up their offering of flaxseed from the 2016 crop. Traders expect a light rise in prices in the next few weeks. In contrast, initial rumours regarding flaxseed prices for the new crop are still below the current price level. About 420-430 EUR/mt FCA Poland are under discussion for 2017 commodities.

China is buying from Canada
According to a chart from the Flax Council of Canada, China increased its flaxseed imports by 68% in recent years, from 283,000 mt to 475,000 mt. However, imports in the first three months of this year are somewhat more sluggish. Canada is an important supplier because of the high production volume and the geographical proximity; other trade partners include the USA and Russia.
