MOSCOW: Russia increased imports of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2017 compared with the previous year. It amounted to 7.1 million MT, which is 17% more than in 2016. However, this is still not the same volume as in 2013. Then, a year before the “trade war”, Russia imported almost 8.5 million MT of fresh fruits and vegetables

Partial restoration of imports is due, firstly, to the fact that in 2017 a boycott was removed by Russia from a number of Turkish goods. In addition, a record volume of (Ecuadorian) bananas and products from other countries was imported. Among them were China, Egypt, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The record volume of supplies of bananas was especially noticeable. In 2017 Russia surpassed Germany and became the second largest banana importer in the world, after the United States. Russia also imported record quantities of mandarins.
