Cereals, oilseeds and pulses: mixed responses to first 2025 crop estimate

ANKARA. Although corn production will rise in Turkey this year, projections for other cereals are less encouraging. Oilseeds and dry pulses are also showing mixed trends. Market opinions, however, show a different picture for corn and red lentils.

Corn bucks the trend for cereals

According to the first crop production estimate for 2025 issued by Turkey’s Statistical Institute (TurkStat) cereal production will dip by 4.1% to 37.4 million mt as compared with 2024. While wheat, barley, rye and oats will witness downturns in production, corn will buck the trend with a 4.9% rise to 8.5 million mt.

Mixed tendencies for oilseeds and dry pulses

For oilseeds soybeans will also sport a double-digit decline, whereas sunflower seed production is expected to rise. In the dry pulses group chickpea and dry bean production is also projected to rise, whereas lentil output will witness quite a drop. Kidney bean production will be relatively flat on last year.

Corn estimate called into question

While the market basically agrees that wheat production will decline due to drought and that good climatic conditions have encouraged a higher chickpea output, opinions differ for corn and red lentils. Issue is that corn producers expect planting to decrease by as much as 60-70% this year on the back of high losses witnessed last year.

They also state that it is too early for reliable estimates as planting was only completed in May. Harvesting will take place in September and October, and possible supply shortages may drive up the market. Traders in Southeastern Anatolia, Turkey’s production hotspot for red lentils, are also more upbeat about this year’s production as they are convinced that the lack of rain experienced in some parts of Turkey will only have a limited impact. Production will, however, witness a downturn.
