ANKARA. As official statistics show cereal production witnessed sharpd downturns in Turkey in 2024. For pulses the story is, however, different. Green lentil production gained sharply and chickpea production was stable.

Chickpea production at 575,000 mt

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) there was a 5% production decrease for cereals and other plant-base products in 2024 as compared with 2023. While production figures were down for cereals such as wheat (-6% to 20.8 million mt), corn (-10% to 8.1 million mt) and barley (-12% to 8.1 million mt), some pulses recorded sharp rises. Pea production, for instance, increased by 41% to 5,353 mt and green lentil production by 42% to 71,000 mt. Chickpea production remained firm at 575,000 mt. By contrast, red lentil production declined by 5% to 405,000 mt and dry bean production by 16% to 279,000 mt.

In April, rainfall was generally positive for grain production in 2025 with the noted exception of the Southeastern Anatolia. Chances are that Turkey's production will be average. The main export destinations comprised Algeria, Iraq and Italy, Morrocco and China in 2024/2023. Imports mainly came from Russia, Canada and Mexico, Kazakhstan and the USA.
