PALMA. As the figures presented at the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council Congress held in Majorca on 8-10 May show the new season has some surprises in store for hazelnuts. Frostbite will weigh on production in Turkey. Chile’s crop was an absolute surprise.

Downturn in production

Expectation is that global in-shell production will range 6% lower than last year at 1.181 million mt. Total supplies will dip by 4% from 1.403 million mt in 2024/2025 to 1.341 million mt in 2025/2026. Main driver is Turkey as top producing country. Although conditions for the 2025 crop initially looked highly encouraging, this changed with the frostbite in mid-April.

Not the final word in Turkey

While the Exporters Association issued a crop estimate of 768.000 mt in March, the second count prompted a downward revision to 609,000 mt, which marks a 22% decline on last year’s crop. Industry leaders are, however, confident that the losses are not quite as bad. The fruit count will provide a clearer picture at the end of June or at the start of July. Another issue is the brown marmorated stink bug. Although growers have been busy setting traps and doing everything in their power to prevent the bug from spreading in recent months, the market is holding its breath as this pest can create extensive damage.

Promising outlooks

In Italy, favourable weather conditions along with good pollination have given rise to upbeat estimates. The crop size may surge by as much as 38%. Prospects are also highly encouraging for the US crop, which is expected to rise by 15%. Recent media reports highlight that Ferrero has been actively investing in Oregon in the last two decades and that the kernels are of premium quality. Many new orchards will turn productive in the next few years, and the US will certainly become a serious competitor for Turkey. As Olam reports this year’s crop has been better than expected in Chile. Figures show that this year’s production has surged by a stunning 63%. Chile holds the advantage of having an anti-cyclical production.
