Hazelnuts: softer prices

ORDU. Prices have finally softened for hazelnuts in Turkey, but farmers are still holding on to supplies in anticipation of higher rates. Exporters state that more inquiries are coming in.

What way will the market turn?

Speculations persist as to in how far a turning point has been reached. After shockingly high prices have been witnessed this season with spring frosts and drought limiting production and quality being an issue some stakeholders argue that buyers should act now, yet also that caution should be adopted.

Fact is that prices have declined sharply since November on the back of slow export demand and high interest rates. While in-shell hazelnuts peaked at TRY 340/kg prices have now fallen to TRY 230/kg in secondary markets such as S
