ORDU. Missing data has delayed the publication of the official crop estimates of the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture. The market, however, has its own ideas.

Speculations are running wild

The Province of Düzce in the northwest of Turkey is to blame for the delay. It is because the province has so far failed to report its data that the publication of the official estimates are already one week behind schedule. It is, however, expected that the estimates will be published in the next few days.

Market players greatly disagree over this year’s production with up to 700,000 mt been initially expected. These optimistic estimates, however, render it rather difficult to push through farmgate prices of at least 15 TRY/kg even with the help of the TMO. At the same time, some traders appear to be exceptionally generous concerning the prices for the new crop.

Processors are closing for the summer

Processors in Turkey will stop their activities over the next few weeks to enjoy their summer break, which are also used for maintenance. Fluctuations in price are mainly caused by the currency. Some cheap offers for prompt delivery are still available. About 425,000 mt of last year’s in shells have been sold so far. Since production ranged at 450,000-500,000 mt it may be considered that supplies are running low with the farmers.
