BRUSSELS. Macadamias were in high demand in 2025. As official EU statistics show imports rose to new records. South Africa and Kenya were the main trading partners.

Spending exceeds EUR 120 million

For the first time on record EU macadamia nut imports exceeded 10 mt last year. In terms of value imports also surged to a record EUR 123 million (USD 146 million), which is a stunning 63% up on the EUR 76 million (USD 90 million) spent in 2024. South Africa accounted for 52% of the EU’s total import volume in 2025 with shipments 28% up. Prospects for the 2026 crop are encouraging, yet carry-over in-shell supplies are limited as Macadamias South Africa (SAMAC) reports.

Kenya is next in line with a 15% rise. As the government has suspended the harvesting and trade of domestic nuts between 1 December 2025 to 15 February 2026 exports from Keyna are currently limited. Aim is to protect the quality of the crop. Australia witnessed a 14% increase.

China as the new world’s leading producer may only rank in seventh position but has stepped up shipments to the EU by 51% and imports from Vietnam have more than doubled. The Netherlands accounted for 39% of the EU’s total import volume in 2025, followed by Germany with 34% and Spain with 10%.
