MOSCOW/OTTAWA. Mustard seeds from Kazakhstan are very popular with customers from Germany this season. Shipments from Canada are also quite impressive.

Weak imports from Russia

In recent years, Russia has been by far the most important supplier of mustard seeds to the German market. Between August and September 2019, however, imports from Russia were significantly reduced. This was compensated by increased imports from Ukraine, Canada and Kazakhstan. Within the past few weeks, farmgate prices for mustard seeds from Kazakhstan (Sinapis Alba, 97% purity) have declined from EUR 0.315 per kg to EUR 0.31 per kg FCA Kazakhstan. They however showed a slight upward trend in the last few days.

Price increase expected in Canada

As Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada stated in its latest report, average prices for mustard seeds could, contrary to expectations, be higher than last year. Due to the smaller acreage, the production volume should be around 19% lower than in 2018. However, lush carry-over stocks from last year ensure that an estimated 222,000 metric tonnes of mustard seeds will still be available on the Canadian market in the 2019/2020 season. This approximately answers to the average of the last two years. At 120,000 metric tones, exports are expected to be at a similar level as last year. Between August and September, it became apparent that EU countries and the USA are still among the most important customers.
