NEW DELHI. In Gujarat, many farmers are switching to more lucrative agricultural commodities, which is why a significantly smaller peanut crop is expected there. Government agencies are selling larger quantities, yet prices receive support.

Crop prospects and crude oil market drive prices

The Indian peanut market recorded price rises in July. Key drivers include expectations for the upcoming crop and developments in crude oil prices. In the state of Gujarat, a 35-40% decline in production is expected due to low rainfall, following many farmers’ switch to growing cotton and soybeans. At the same time, the recent rise in palm oil prices in Malaysia and Indonesia – fuelled by the latest escalation in geopolitical tensions – has provided further support for the peanut market.
