NEW DELHI. Farmers in India are keen to purchase high-quality seeds to sow peanuts. Edible oil is trading lower. Yields have risen sharply in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Impressive growth in Uttar Pradesh

In the state of Uttar Pradesh, the state government is taking several initiatives to encourage peanut sowing. Also, the government will take aid from the World Bank to establish a peanut cluster in the Jhansi district. Only a few years ago Uttar Pradesh contributed less than 1 % to the national output. This figure has now reached 5%. Yields have also risen from around 900 kg/ha to 1,580 kg/ha.

Downturn in edible oil prices and run on seeds

The global prices of edible oils are witnessing a downturn and the same effect will be seen on peanuts. Peanut prices have, however, shown growth recently driven by massive purchases from National Agricultural Cooperative NAFED as cultivators want to procure higher grade crops for sowing. In addition, oil companies are getting superior quality at better prices. However, the situation will turn complex in next week or so because NAFED has already sold a large volume of good quality crops, around 380,000-400,000 mt in Gujarat alone. Demand for sowing will also decrease.
