NEW DELHI/BUENOS AIRES. The severe drought in Gujarat is causing great concern amongst growers, whilst peanut farmers in Argentina are facing the exact opposite situation. The market is now considering two possible scenarios.

Significantly smaller acreage in Gujarat

Indian peanut prices have risen noticeably over the course of the month. This is primarily due to the ongoing drought in the Indian state of Gujarat, the most important peanut-growing region. There, the acreage sown is up to 40% below last year’s level, which is boosting buying interest. In addition, government agencies have raised their auction prices; according to market experts, the authorities still hold stocks of around 600,000 to 625,000 mt, meaning that no significant price fall is expected in the short term.
