Poppy seed: Sowing delayed in Australia

HOBART. Rainfall has delayed poppy seed sowing in Tasmania, Australia's largest growing region, with only a month left before it has to be completed.

What has happened so far
Australia produces about 50% of the world's opiates for the pharmaceutical industry. Fearing a shortage and supply bottlenecks for painkillers due to rising demand, large pharmaceutical companies urged Australian poppy growers to drastically increase their production back in 2012.
