WARSAW. Due to the poor quality of production, apples from Poland cannot be shipped to India. Problem is that the fruits will not survive transportation.

Poland may lose position as reliable supplier

Producers in Poland are confronted with the problem that they will not be able to ship appled to India. Poland normally ships high-quality apples to India and is considered a reliable supplier. Market players are cocnerned that this postiion is now endangered. Problem is that the quality of this year's production is so low that the fruits will be spoilt over the long time it takes to ship them to India. Some traders, nevertheless, hope to find buyers closer to Poland. Experts are, however, not quite as optimistic. The prices have recently been so low in Poland that it has no longer payed for the gardeners to look after their fruits.

India will obviously be looking for alternatives and it should be noted that the country recently opened the market for imports from the Ukraine. Despite the fact that it will take a long time for the market to gain confidence in the Ukraine as a reliable partner, the situation in Poland may easily give afford exporters in the Ukraine a considerable advantage, which the can build on. After all, the demand for apples from Ukraine is good, and they are clearly better in quality than the apples from Poland this year.
