Sultanas: unexpected rise in exports in Turkey

MANISA. With sunny weather conditions and temperatures expected to rise as high as 30C prospects could hardly be more encouraging in Manisa. Growers are at present in the process of picking and selling vine leaves, which are considered a popular delicacy overseas. This practice has, however, sparked controversy. Market players are also surprised about the sudden uptick in exports.

Although vine leaves are a popular delicacy that generate good sales, this practice has also created a backlash in the past. Issue is that growers have frequently cut too many leaves off the vines, which has left the grapes exposed to adverse weather conditions and an increased risk of damage. The market is, therefore, viewing this practice with concern.

40% rise in weekly exports

Although Ramadan is underway, Turkey witnessed a sharp rise in exports in the last week of April. Overseas shipments ranged as high as 5,111 mt, which is nearly 40% up on the same
