BEIJING. Reports over a sharp decline in sowing are driving up pumpkin kernel prices in China. The blockage of the Suez Canal prompted by the grounding of the Ever Given container ship has created a backlash in the market. Customers in Europe are confronted with stunningly high freight charges of USD 4,800-5,2000.

Expensive raw kernels and rising freight charges

The prices for raw Shine Skins have risen from CNY 15.30/kg to CNY 16.20/kg in only one week. GWS kernels are still trading firm at CNY 20.00/kg. At the same time, the grounding of the Ever Given container ship has created a backlash as freight charges for a 20' FCL container load to Europe currently range at a stunningly high USD 4,800-5,200. A wide price gap, therefore, exists in the export market with prices differing by several hundred US dollars per tonne.
