Raisins: factories are only running at half capacity

MALAYER. Iran produces an average of 180,000 metric tonnes of raisins every year. As much as 40,000 metric tonnes are produced in and around the city of Malayer in the Hamadan province, which also accounts for as much as 30% of all exports. Although up to 80,000 metric tonnes of raisins can be packed in this region, the processors are only working at half their capacity.

Inadequate handling is a problem

As much as 242,424 metric tonnes of fresh grapes are produced in Malayer, most of which are suitable for producing raisins. Although last year’s fresh gape production ranged higher at 343,000 metric tonnes, as much as 66,000 metric tonnes were damaged by cold weather. Inadequate handling poses an additional problem in the region, which is why the 60 processing and packaging units in Hamadan are only working at half their capacities.
