Basmati hopes to be strong this year, due to low rainfall, Less sowing

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon season ended last week with a decrease of 5 per cent. At present, no state has been declared as drought-prone in the country but reports of rainfall and drying of crops are coming from many parts of the country. The area's main crop of season (Kharif) has decreased the area of paddy and cotton, which indicates that monsoon is not normal. According to the report of the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which came under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, this year, sowing of basmati paddy has decreased by about 8% compared to last year, whereas the total sowing of paddy is nearly Three per cent decreased. In the year 2016, Basmati had a total area of 1.689 million hectares in the major states of Basmati, which fell to 1.555 million hectares in this year i.e. 2017.

According to the APEDA report, basmati producer state of Haryana, Basmati sowing this year, 9.39 per cent in Punjab, 8.84 per cent in Punjab, 3.76 per cent in Uttar Pradesh, 2.43 per cent in Uttarakhand, 2.09 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir, 1.25 per cent in Himachal Pradesh and 1.25 per cent in Delhi. Basmati cultivation has declined by 2.67 percent.

According to the Meteorological Department, last year the record crop was sown in the country. But this time it has decreased slightly, which does not make any difference. If you look at the data of APIDA, it is known that the effect of the rains is not only on Basmati but also on the entire paddy crop. According to APEDA, during the kharif season 2016, paddy was cultivated in 5.986 million hectare which was reduced by about 3 percent to 5.806 million in the country's major paddy producing states. That is, the paddy cultivation this year is about three percent less than last year. In Punjab, the lowest decrease in the area of paddy has declined in Punjab this year. Paddy cultivation declined by 4.80 per cent and Haryana by 2.26 per cent.

With the news of the decline in Basmati cultivation in the country, there is a possibility of a decrease in exports this year. With this, India's empire can also end in Basmati. India is a major country in exporters of Basmati rice. Basmati is exported mainly to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

But the export of basmati rice has been continuously decreasing for the past four years. During the year 2016-17, 4.0 million tonnes of Basmati rice was exported from the country of US$3323.78 milllion, whereas in 2015-16, US$3495 million, US$3784.29 crore in 2014-15 and basmati rice worth US$4507.60 in 2013-14 were exported. Rice exporters say that the export is currently better in the current financial year.

The decrease in the area of Basmati will be seen in the last quarter of the financial year, which could reduce the export figure of the whole year. Although the export has increased in the first four months of the current financial year. Basmati rice has been exported 1,559,395.98 tonnes worth rupees US$ US$1559.38 million between April and July this year, while in April-July, 2016-17, 1,548,534.01 tonnes of basmati rice was exported for US$1251.22 million

Current Situation of Basmati prices drop due to demand slowdown

Due to a substantial drop in demand at the existing level, the prices of rice Basmati in Delhi were down in wholesale grain market. Market sources told the decline in the prices of basmati rice due to the decline in the demand of stockists and rice mills at the current high level.
