Saffron: Fraud detected in Europe

New techniques for saffron falsification have invaded Europe in recent years and have prompted new technologies for identifying frauds to be developed.

 More than 50% fail tests

New analytical technique for detecting fake saffron mixed with fruit extracts of Gardenia have been developed. The problem is that saffron is frequently diluted with fruit extracts of Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides). This product is, however, banned in Europe. Scientists from the Czech Republic and Spain confirmed that false labelling is a serious problem after analysing 44 commercial products. By using a new technique based on each type of saffron's unique chemical 'fingerprint', the scientists have proved that over 50% of the samples
