Saffron: quality pays

TEHRAN. Demand for saffron has risen sharply in January and February. Good news for suppliers is that buyers are prepared to pay more.

Exports 42% up

Bulk exports, however, still make up 90% of the volumes shipped (43,906 kg worth USD 49.569 million), which entails less revenue for Iran’s packaging industry as average export prices only range at USD 1,129/kg. Although the prices for small and retail packages range higher at USD 1,161/kg, the volumes shipped are much smaller (4,508 kg worth USD 5.235 million).
