NEW DELHI. The sesame seed prices are still desperately holding on just below last year's level, however, the downward spiral began with the arrival of the summer crop in 2016. It could be different this year.

The market is resting
Except for occasional outliers, the sesame seed prices varied within a fixed framework in the past few weeks. Even though the last Korean sesame seed tender could have caused an increase in prices.

According to current information, the summer crop is estimated to reach 25,000 mt, however, it is divided about 50/50 between black and white sesame seeds. With the exception of the very small summer crop in 2016 (14,000-15,000 mt), the summer crop generally reached 30,000-60,000 mt in recent years. As a result, this year's production is also comparatively low.

The current demand situation is not sufficient to give prices another boost. Still, the smaller intermediate crop could cause a strong drop in the availability over the summer months, until the main crop enters the market in the fall.
