Sesame seeds: New food trends spark recovery in demand in Europe

GUJARAT. Although the prospects for the new crop are highly encouraging and new health trends are boosting demand in Europe, the market situation spells disaster for the exporters in India. They are confronted with misguided prices and fierce competition from Africa.

Decline in exports

The market in India has witnessed a considerable decline in exports. Between April 2018 and August 2019, the country exported 286,622 metric tonnes of sesame seeds, which is a decline of 15% over the same period in 2017/2018. Contrary to this the export figures for sesame oil are more encouraging as India exported as much as 9,229 metric tonnes between April 2018 and February 2019.
