NEW DELHI/DODOMA. In Gujarat, smaller sesame fields are being cultivated this spring in favour of other crops. Lower demand and competition from Brazil are putting pressure on prices in Indian trading markets.

In the Indian state of Gujarat, sesame farmers have begun sowing for the summer crop. According to market players, around 15-20% less acreage is to be cultivated with white sesame seeds for the coming crop than last year, while farmers could expand the acreage under black sesame seeds by 1.5 to 2.5 times. The reason for the change is that black sesame seeds can generate significantly higher profits than white sesame seeds.
