NEW DELHI. The result of South Korea's current tender for 9,000 metric tonnes of sesame seeds was clear and not surprising.

Tender prices from USD 1,249 per metric tonne

The curfews make export conditions in the African growing countries more difficult. In addition, the good summer crop massively pushed down sesame seed prices in India. Indian exporters were awarded the contract for the complete 9,000 metric tonnes, which must be delivered to South Korea by 31 August 2020.

China buys in India

Apart from the tender, export demand for Indian sesame seeds remains low. According to reports, there are virtually no enquiries from Europe and the USA. Chinese buyers, however, are increasingly turning to India, despite an export duty of around 9%, to absorb the missing shipments from countries such as Sudan. The export prices for hulled sesame seeds from India are at a level of USD 1.60 per kg CIF Hamburg, as last week. Natural sesame seeds are currently traded for USD 1.32 per kg CIF Hamburg.
