NEW DELHI. Heavy rains reported in Gujarat may have an adverse impact on the sesame seed crop. Market players estimate the damage at...

... 10-15%. Saurashtra and Kutch are the main regions affected. However, it should be noted that farmers in Gujarat have stepped up sowing considerably over last year, meaning that potential crop damages would be limited in comparison. The total area sown is estimated at 1.167m ha in India, which is up on last year's 1.094m ha.

Prices are up

After suppliers from India successfully bid in the tender mid-August, the prospects of possible crop damages are now driving up prices. Hulled sesame seeds with a 99.95% purity are now trading at USD 1.60/kg CIF Hamburg
