MANNHEIM. Südzucker has released its first quarter results for 2018/19. At EUR 1,741 million Südzucker’s consolidated group revenues have dropped marginally below last year’s results in the first quarter (1 March to 31 May 2018). While revenues in the special products segment rose considerably to EUR 558 million, revenues in the fruit segment remained relatively stable at EUR 312 million.

Sales volume fail to compensate for revenues

Revenues in the sugar segment declined by 2.4%. Although sales volumes have increased significantly, they failed to compensate for reduced sales revenues, which have been pursuing a downward trend since October 2017. Südzucker reckons with a significant drop for the sugar segment in the 2018/19 fiscal year. Late sugar beet planting in April has been offset by ideal weather conditions. This year’s beet cultivation acreage is therefore stable at 435,800 ha (2017: 445,000 ha).

Losses in line with expectations

As expected, the group’s operative results have declined considerably to EUR 78 million (previous year: EUR 153 million) caused mainly by the developments in the sugar and crop energies segments. Südzucker expects consolidated group revenues to amount to approximately EUR 6.8-7.1 billion in 2018/19 (2018/17: EUR 7,0 billion). Consilidated group operating results are to come down considerably to EUR 100-200 million (2017/18: EUR 445 million).

BRASÍLIA/BRUSSELS. Grounds are slippery in Brazil’s sugar market as local traders do not only need to keep a close eye on quotations in New York and London but are also confronted with manipulation and fraud. The EU may not be Brazil’s top export destination, but raw cane sugar imports have soared despite prices being high.

BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT. EU sugar exports are expected to outstrip imports in the current marketing year. Although the market has certainly rebounded from the impact of the pandemic, sugar manufactures are trying to adopt a cautious approach to the post-pandemic future in 2021/2022. Market prices are also reflecting this development.
