BRAUNSCHWEIG. In a recently published press release sugar giant Nordzucker has announced that the processing campaign will start in Poland and Slovakia on 12 September, one week later than usual. In addition, the Farmers’ Association Landvolk has voiced concerns over the new season in Lower Saxony in Germany.

Below average crop expected

The one-week delay to the processing campaign is due to the extremely dry weather conditions over the summer. Campaigns in other countries are to start a few days later. Finland will follow on 4 Ocotber. The processing campaign will last until January. Some regions in Denmark, Sweden and Poland and Germany witnessed no rain at all. Growers in Slovakia and Lithuania are more fortunate as sufficient rains have benefited the development of the beets.

Nordzucker, which represents 15,000 growers, expects below-average crops and the yields are to differ greatly depending on region. This will pose a great challenge for the processing plants. Landvolk also voices concerns that it may be difficult to harvest the beets as the unusually hot temperatures and lack of precipitation witnessed over the summer months, have virtually baked the beets into the ground. It should prove highly difficult for the beet lifters to extricate the beets.
