FRANKFURT. Sugar giant Nordzucker is complaining about an excessive increase in sugar beet planting and Südzucker confronts its shareholders with a decrease in turnover. After abolishing the sugar quotas, the EU sugar market is now facing enormous challenges.

Price drop in the EU

The prices for granulated sugar EC Cat II may have dropped considerably in October, but have been trading on a stable level of 0.40 EUR/kg DDP Germany ever since. The EU Commission has observed a slightly higher price of 0.42 EUR/kg EXW. This sudden decline in prices is due to the massive increase in production by almost 25% as compared to last year. Latest estimates reckon with an output of 21.4 M mt in 2017/18. Market players agree that the market is characterised by a high degree of uncertainty.
