Sunflowers were cultivated on the American continent as early as 2,500 B.C. - namely in the Mississippi region and in Mexico City. The Incas are even said to have worshipped the flower as an image of their God. The plants were also a popular motif for van Gogh. In the middle of the 16th century, Spanish sailors brought the plant to Europe. Initially used as an ornamental plant, sunflower seeds started to be used for baking in the 17th century.
