SOFIA/BEIJING. With the political-economic situation being far from stable, the outlook is rather bleak for Bulgaria's sunflower seed market. Acreage has also declined in China this year.

Farmers take to the streets

Farmers have took to the streets in Bulgaria to protest against the continuous decline in prices in recent weeks and to urge the government to act. The high volumes of sunflower seeds imported from Ukraine have exacerbated the problem and more ships arrived in the port of Varna the end of July. Trouble is that inflation coupled with high energy costs have hit Bulgaria hard prompting the population to lose faith in Kiril Petkov's government, which collpased in June.

President Rumen Radev has now called a snap election for 2 October
