Sunflower seeds: Concerns about the Bulgarian harvest

SOFIA. Bulgarian farmers are busy sowing for the sunflower seed crop 2019. Rain showers are reported for the coming days, which are also urgently needed in the drier parts of the country.

Deviating harvest forecasts
The Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture has not yet published its report on this year's sunflower seeds sowing. Experts are currently assuming that the area under cultivation will be 740,000 ha, about the same size as last year, while others expect the area to increase.

The decisive factor for the crop result is above all the weather, as the 2018/19 harvest impressively showed. Many Eastern European growing countries were rewarded with record yields, while French farmers, for example, suffered heavy losses.
