Sunflower seeds: EU revises crop forecast

SOFIA/DALIAN. In its latest report, the European Commission has significantly reduced its forecast for the 2026 sunflower seed crop. Sowing is in full swing in many places. Bulgaria is emerging as the EU’s leading importer of sunflower seeds.

Weather will be the deciding factor

In its latest report, the European Commission has revised its crop forecast. Compared to the initial estimate from March, production is now expected to be 8% lower and, at 8,795,000 mt, only slightly above last year’s level. However, the estimated size of the EU-wide acreage remains relatively unchanged; yet the yield forecast for many countries has been significantly reduced and now stands at just 1,789 mt/ha, which is 8% less than in the March report.
