SOFIA. Weather conditions in Bulgaria are slowly turning back to normal and in February temperatures are expected to be back within their average range. It will be very cold again at the end of January but at least no further snowfall is expected.

Sunflower seeds are in demand
According to UkrAgroConsult about 800,000 mt of sunflower seeds will be processed in mills in the season of 2016/2017 which would amount to 42% of the total crop (>1.7m mt). In the preceding season the proportion was only 39%. Market participants assume that for the crop in 2017 the same surface area will be cultivated with sunflower seeds as in 2016. A container has been ready in the harbour of Varna already since last week to be loaded with sunflower seeds. A total of 30,500 mt will be shipped. Even so prices for black sunflower seeds, purity 96%, have gone down to 355 EUR/mt CPT Varna.

All obstacles removed
By now the roads are open again for trucks and power supply has been restored so that everyone down to the last supplier can participate in trade activities again.
Some buyers have stocked up on sunflower seeds, bakery, but otherwise demand has dropped again. This in turn has had an influence on prices which dropped in Bulgaria by all of 5 EUR/mt to 655 EUR/mt FCA. Some suppliers are prepared to negotiate prices but are cautious about signing long term contracts.
