Sunflower seeds: Prices pick up speed

SOFIA/BUCHAREST. This season shows that not even the global record production can prevent prices from rising in individual markets. Sunflower seeds are highly popular.

 

Romania records bumper crop

Romania is the largest sunflower seed producer in the EU and has hit an absolute record of 2.8-3.0 million mt in this season. Demand is high in any case. As UkrAgroConsult has reported, the country exported a total of 1.8 million mt of in 2017/18 driven by an increase in demand in Turkey. Romania required imports from Moldova to meet enquiries.

Raw seeds are becoming increasingly expensive

At 1.9-2.0 million mt, Bulgaria recorded a good production. The figure is, however, not above average.
