SOFIA/KYIV. The escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is causing massive uncertainty, not least in the sunflower seed market, in addition to all the humanitarian concerns.

Uncertain times

Russia and Ukraine together grow more than half of the world's sunflower seed crop; Ukraine has been the most important growing country so far. The prices for oilseeds and grain on the stock exchanges seem boundless. Exporters are withdrawing their offers and farmers are refraining from selling. Bulgarian traders currently fear that there are not enough goods available and the domestic farmgate prices for black sunflower seeds have already risen to BGN 1,350/mt or EUR 690/mt and the offers for shelled bakery kernels also made a leap to
