SOFIA. Although the European Commission has revised this year’s production estimates downwards, a year-on-year increase is nevertheless to be expected. Meanwhile, stocks are dwindling in Bulgaria.

EU production to exceed 10 million mt

In the current report of the European Commission, acreage has been revised downward from 4.18 million ha to 4.17 million ha. Although acreage is estimated 1% above last year, the new estimate is below the five-year average of 4.20 million ha.

With an average yield of 2.4 mt/ha, this year’s production should range at 10.04 million mt, an increase of 1% over last year (9.95 million mt) and nearly 8% above the 5-year average (9.32 million mt).
