SOFIA/KYIV. Although the outlook was initially good, persistent drought and high temperatures in recent weeks mean that yields in some growing regions are likely to be lower.

Heat stress in Bulgarian growing regions

Heat and drought could lead to significant yield losses in Bulgaria again this year. According to Iliya Prodanov, chairman of the Bulgarian National Association of Grain Producers, crops sown in spring, such as sunflowers and corn, are showing signs of drought stress. Prodanov said that some fields were in ‘miserable’ condition and that the chances of a full recovery were slim, which meant that there was a risk that the crop would be significantly lower than last year.
